Fuel cells and hydrogen industry supports Zapatero’s push for electrical transport
22/01/2010
Prime Minister Zapatero of Spain is committed to pushing electric car production in Europe higher up in the EU´s 2020 economic strategy. The Industry Grouping of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Technology Initiative (NEW-IG) welcomes the initiative and supports the Spanish Presidency’s vision for sustainable transport.
Fuel cell vehicles are zero emission electric vehicles which are capable of producing their own electricity out of hydrogen. When used to power cars with electric motors, hydrogen fuel cells are two to three times more efficient than gas-fuelled internal combustion engines. They have zero-emissions and, because they have few moving parts, are quiet and vibration-free.
Gijs van Breda Vriesman, Chairman of the Industry Grouping said: “Fuel cell vehicles are part of the electrical car family. A clear commitment from the EU’s Presidency might be the tipping point we need to trigger a mass-market introduction. A coordinated approach towards the various efforts for development is indeed fundamental to an effective introduction of green cars.”
Mr. van Breda Vriesman added: “Our public-private partnership with the European Commission is tackling the cost and durability challenges of the technology that will allow full commercialization of electric vehicles.”
Together with the European Commission and a group of research institutions, NEW-IG has committed to invest more than €1 Billion to reduce time-to-market of fuel cells and hydrogen technologies.
