Mission
NEW-IG is the private industrial partner of the European Commission for the proposed Joint Technology Initiative for fuel cell and hydrogen.
The JTI is the new way of developing strong, long-term public-private partnerships for Europe. The JTI will accelerate the development and deployment of cost-competitive, world-class European hydrogen and fuel cell based energy systems and component technologies for applications in transport, stationary and portable power. The Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking was created under Art.171 of the EC Treaty and is based on the JTI Regulation.
The establishment of NEW-IG is the key result of four years of work by the European Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Platform, an initiative of the European Commission, which brought together stakeholders from across the European fuel cell and hydrogen industry. HFP called for the establishment of a European Joint Undertaking, with the goal of creating a major, well funded, and integrated technology development and demonstration programmes. It aims at accelerating the market entry of fuel cell and hydrogen technologies under the Seventh Framework Programme.
To this end, a JTI Programme Office was established to manage the technology development and demonstration programmes with resources from the private and public partners of the Joint Undertaking.
The objectives of NEW-IG are to
- Represent the interest of the industry within the Joint Technology Initiative (JTI)
- Ensure a coordinated vision of the Industry on the JTI process and activities
- Establish application oriented industry committees to support specific industry needs
- Elect and nominate industry representatives for the JTI Governing Board
- Contribute to the management and operational costs of the JTI Programme Office in equal part with the European Commission and on a continuous basis for the duration of the EU Seventh Framework Programme
